Ham has a various times worked for the military, the CIA, and as a mercenary. He was married to a Eurasian woman and had one daughter, but both his wife and daughter were killed by 'friendly fire' during the Vietnam War. During the First Invasion he was part of a highly secret branch of Covert Operations for the U.S. government. He was sent to the LA Resistance by the WLF (World Liberation Front) to get the LA group to join the WLF and to introduce them to all the resistance technology available for the fight. Initially distrustful of Julie due to her possible conversion by Diana, and with a healthy dislike of "Gooder" (his nickname for Donovan, short for Do-Gooder), Ham came to be a valued member of the Resistance. Though no one would accuse Ham of having the proverbial "heart of gold", he is not as ruthless as his gruff exterior seems.

After the invasion, Ham was hired by Nathan Bates to kidnap Diana and fake her death. Bates planned to trade Diana her life for her knowledge of the LA Mothership. Diana managed to escape from Bates, however, and Ham went back to the LA Resistance when Diana returned to lead the Second Invasion. Ham provides weapons, explosives, and vehicles to the Resistance. He eventually leaves the LA group, with Chris Faber, in order to escort Robin Maxwell to Chicago, where he presumably now works with the Chicago Resistance.
